About
Xiaocui Yu is a London-based visual artist whose practice brings the imagery and spatial traditions of Chinese painting into conversation with Western watercolour. She also works with ink, screen printing and Japanese painting techniques.
Her landscapes, figures and mythic imagery explore memory, cultural inheritance and inner experience. Fragmented surfaces and historical references appear alongside flowers, butterflies and imagined worlds, making painting a way to consider time, nature and the experience of change.
Yu holds an MFA and a BFA in Art Education from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. She studied on international exchange at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo, and has undertaken residencies in Italy, the United States and North Macedonia. Her wider practice includes artist books, public art, calligraphy and performance.
